About This Boat

Back in the year 2000 our company had a partnership with master catamaran builder Phillippe Richard in Trinidad. Philippe converted the old Naval hanger outside of Chaguaramas into a catamaran storage, repair, and build facility. We called it the Catamaran Village. During this time Philippe managed warranty and service repairs for Catana in the Caribbean. Suffice it to say it was a French inspired yard. 

It was during this time that many were clamoring for more performance oriented cats that were made in composite which could carry decent payloads. The Outremer cats at the time were relatively primitive with all glass hulls and decks - strong but also very heavy.

At this time Sud Composites was starting up with the Switch line of cats we represented, which were VPLP designs. Sea Child was also a VPLP design meant to be an even higher-end build than Switch or Catana, and a more performance oriented cat all around. It began as a joint project between Philippe and Catana to create the Aikane high performance cat. Philippe tooled up the Aikane 56 in Trinidad. Three of them were built and then they decided to do an Aikane 90 that was never finished and later taken back to France for completion. As was so often the case in those days the costs to build these all epoxy, foam core, hand made cats was considerably higher than anticipated. The boat never found a market large enough to carry on. She was just sadly a bit ahead of her time.

I sold Sea Child to a long time friend and customer I grew up with in Newport, California, over 14 years ago. He and his wife have been sailing around the world on her all this time, taking breaks of course to come back to see their family in Maui and Newport Beach. Sea Child has been everywhere!  She is a proven world voyager if there ever was one and she has been cared for by her owners carefully since day one, as there life depended on it. 

The pandemic, of course, changed many things for all of us. Sea Child arrived in Grenada as the pandemic began to rage and her owners had 24 hours to get her up, on the hard, put to bed, and organized to be looked after. If they did not get back to Hawaii they would have been stuck!  

As the pandemic lifted, Sea Child's owners decided to go ahead and get another newer cat, and they did. We recently sold them a 2018 performance cat to replace Sea Child. 

Sea Child is an awesome catamaran, that is all I can say. In her time she was the most advanced cat around.  And while design and ergonomic features have changed over the past few decades her hull shapes are pure and clean - the best of the VPLP designs and Phillippe was a master builder of the highest order.

Who is Sea Child for?  She is for the high performance sort of buyer who would be considering a Schionning, Grainger, Switch sort of catamaran or one of my Balance Cats if the budget allowed for it.  Fine hulls, great clearance, dagger-boards, carbon rig, etc.  This is a boat that likes to saunter at 12 knots and is happy to go 14 to 17 with ease and over 20 if you are up for it. I still remember our sea trials on her off Trinidad, the speed and grace through which she moved through the water.

Sea Child is on the hard right now, but can be made ready for a sea trial and survey when required. The plan is for her owner to head back down, get his things off her and to recommission her as required for her new owner.  She did have a survey done in Grenada that we are happy to share with serious buyers but of course they can conduct a new one as they wish.  She is probably due soon for a new Awlgrip paint job, sails are in good shape but 2014 Hydranet and some folks might wish to replace them.  We have priced the boat to be sold AS IS, figuring that a new buyer would want to decide how to paint her, what sails they want if they wish to replace, upgrade some electronics, etc. We couldn't replace this cat today for less than $2.7 million. I believe she is the finest performance cat in the world today selling for under 600K.  A rare find.

  • All new 12v house batteries - 850amp
  • New starter motor installed on 30hp Tohatsu outboard
  • New membranes replaced on water maker
  • New cutlass bearing installed on starboard side
  • Both max props completely overhauled by Max Prop in Washington State

2015 - 2019

  • Ignition system replaced (2018)
  • Starting batteries replaced for each engine (2018)
  • Cap shrouds and lowers were replaced with new amsteel made by Smart Rigging (2017).  Currently there are two amsteel cap shrouds aboard Sea Child waiting to be replaced (Warranty replacement by Smart Rigging)
