The Island Spirit brand was introduced into the United States and the Caribbean charter market in 1998. Designed by Phil Southwell and built in South Africa by Fortuna Yachts and then later Fortuna Catamarans Inc. it very quickly became popular due to the revolutionary design which offered both optimal space and superior sailing performance.

The Island Spirits have been awarded Top Ten Sail Magazine awards in 2001, 2003 and 2005. Although they are a lesser known boat, they are stout and capable ocean-going catamarans. In fact, every one of these boats built was delivered on their own bottoms to owners all over the world, with 38 crossing the Atlantic for delivery in the USA. They are constructed with solid glass below the waterline and balsa cored decks. Each hull is separated into multiple compartments with a sealed crush compartment fore and aft making them extremely safe. OWNER COMMENTS

MaXScene is a great example of an Island Spirit catamaran. Originally commissioned in 1998 with multiple upgrades and unique features. We purchased her in South Africa as the second owner in 2010 – up to that point she had lived in a Cape Town Marina for her owner’s exclusive use.

After sailing her up to Richards Bay on the NE coast of South Africa we kept here there for the next 4 years. In this time, we sailed her up to Mozambique twice and started with some of the minor upgrades as we became more familiar with her.  2015 we sailed her back down the coast of South Africa stopping along the way in Durban, Port Elizabeth, Port St Francis, Mossel Bay and Simonstown.  2016 in Cape town saw the start of our total refit.

REFIT

  • In this time we moved off MaXScene for 6 months
  • Old Yanmar 2GM20 engines and sail drives removed complete with Engine beds.
  • New Engine beds installed to accommodate the longer 3 cylinder EU Spec 3YM30AE engines with SD25 sail drives
  • Closed in Chines with foam core panels to improve water flow and additional buoyancy on manufacturers recommendation on improving sailing performance
  • New rudder bushes manufactured
  • 2017, After the refit we sailed her up to Saldanha bay for commissioning all the new systems and some final installations
  • Late 2018 we crossed the Atlantic from Cape Town – St Helena – Brazil – French Guyana – Grenada. 2019 and 2020 we have been up and down the Caribbean island chain twice
  • She is outfitted for extending living at anchor. Her systems allow us to live comfortably off the grid for extended periods of time. The 1300 W solar and Rutland 1200 wind generator covers all of our electricity needs, including the on-board washing machine and our 12v low energy consumption 60 L/h water maker.
  • A Honda 2000 generator provides 220V AC is a backup source of energy – and recharges our Li battery through a powerful Victron Multiplus 3000/120/12 inverter Charger.
  • All new installations / upgrades have been carried out using globally supported original parts and marine products.
  • MaXScene is a beautiful boat and we have loved our last 10 years with her - She is a great boat that has served us well, but now it’s time to pass her on to new owners to continue her adventure.
