Searunner 40 - “Seafire ”

Searunner 40 - “Seafire ”

This Searunner 40 is a true bluewater boat. She's in excellent condition and pride of ownership is evident throughout. Everything aboard has been set up and maintained with safe, seakindly, bluewater sailing in mind. This is a one-family boat. She was constructed with care from a custom run of marine plywood. In each sheet the outer half of the plys are mahogany hardwood and inner plys are fir. West Systems Epoxy was used to encapsulate all materials and then finished on the exterior with Interlux Perfection 2-part Polyurethane. Decks are coated with a durable, easily-renewed non-skid and interior spaces and bilges are painted, clean, dry, and attractive. The cockpit is set up with extra-large winches, many dedicated winches, and clever leads to make handling safe and easy. She has a baker's dozen sails allowing her cutter rig to meet wide ranging conditions, a very accessible and well-maintained 30 hp diesel engine, and a wonderful complement of bluewater equipment, spares, and gear that make her a truly ready-to-go bluewater cruiser.

Her owners took her on a tour of the Pacific 2001-2005 with their family. She cruised from Seattle to San Diego, Mexico, then off to the Marquesas, Tahiti, Pago Pago, and then up to Christmas and Fanning atolls and back to Seattle. When she returned she was given a complete refit and is ready to go again. If you're looking for a well-cared-for cruising multihull that is easy on the pocketbook, easy to care for, and very capable at sea and capable of being easily handed by a cruising couple or family, spend some time getting to know Seafire.

Layout & Accommodations

She is a center-cockpit trimaran with forward nets between the bows, storage for sails and lightweight gear in the amas, and interior accommodations divided between an aft sterncastle and a forecabin.  The sterncastle is the heart of the boat with its convertible dinette making into a large owner's double.  You can literally sit up in this berth at night and have a 300 degree view of the anchorage.  No need to climb on deck to check holding and a beautiful view when settled in for a meal.  Meals are readily prepared in the large galley with separate dinette nook.  Beneath the dinette nook is the engine access - and excellent access it is.  The well cared for 30 hp diesel has only 2000 hours.  Up in the cockpit you will find oversized primary winches, extra dedicated winches for trimming running rigging, mast winches for raising halyards.  More winches for ease of handling than any other Searunner I've seen with everything safely adjustable from the cockpit.  Forward are two double wing bunks and the head and vanity as well as forepeak stowage and 300' of chain in the rode locker.  Everything is clean, cared for, and well thought out.

Specifications & Equipment

Hull & Deck

She is assembled with frame and stringer construction, sheathed in Marine plywood, all parts coated with at least two coats of WEST System epoxy.  The entire exterior is covered with fiberglass.

The plywood used was from a special run done by US Plywood. The plywood has outer veneers of dense mahogany and inner veneers of fir, and no interior voids.  Most of topside structure is built of seven-ply 3/8″; the underwater 45-degree panels below the chine (corner) are ½” plywood, and the bottom is ¾” plywood (all from the same mahogany / fir run from US Plywood).

Deck - Astec Finish Coat 900, new in 2007

Centerboard, centerboard trunk, minikeel

Seafire was constructed with a widened centerboard trunk by 3/8″ to accommodate any potential swelling, and assembled the minikeel from laminations of marine plywood rather than lumber.  Additionally, the builder glassed the entire minikeel in multiple laminations of tri-axial fiberglass to eliminate any potential for water intrusion.

Hard dodger - Marine plywood, coated in epoxy, exterior sheathed in fiberglass.

Steering system- Wheel with cable steering

Spares - Emergency rudder with separate gudgeons; transom ladder positioned to aid with installation.   Spare cables.

Engine & mechanical

Engine - Yanmar 3GM30, 2000 hours, installed in 1996.

Engine oil changed consistently every 50 hrs, or every fall and spring, whichever is sooner.

Searunner trimarans typically have their inboard engines installed in a very small compartment on the port side of their centerboard trunks, hard to access for maintenance and replacement.  Seafire’s engine is installed one frame aft in an open section of hull with easy access.

Propellers - Fixed Michigan prop; spare Martec folding prop.

Fuel tank - 37 gallons

Fuel filters - Racor dual-filter system

Outboard motor bracket -In case the diesel fails, you can attach an outboard for mobility.

Electrical system

House bank - 490AH; new in 2005.

Monitor - Xantrex Link 20

Fixed inverter - Xantrex Prowatt 600

Power sources

Solar panels - 192 watts in total; all panels are amorphous (unbreakable); 2 – Unisolar US-64′s, 2 – Unisolar US-32′s.  With regulator.

Wind generator - Rutland; selected because of low-noise characteristics (wind generator is located immediately over skipper’s bunk and main dinette).  With regulator.

Engine alternator - Standard 55-amp alternator but with external regulator (originally had a high-output alternator but it turned out not to be necessary).

Spare alternator - Same.

Seller's Note: during our five-year cruise, we rarely used Seafire’s engine to charge the batteries because the solar and wind systems were able to keep the batteries charged.

Electronics

Autopilot- Raytheon ST 4000+ set up to drive trim-tab, with controls wired to cockpit.

Interior

Upholstery - Curtains, cushion covers and cushions in main living accommodations replaced in 2007.

Bunks - Three doubles.  The aft bunk is in sterncastle and converts into the main dinette.

This aft bunk is one of Seafire’s highlights — its location and the surrounding windows provide the skipper and first mate with a 300-degree view of the surroundings, a major comfort factor at night in unsettled weather.  Additionally, this bunk provides 20 feet of acoustical privacy.
