When you are cruising the most beautiful places on earth, why crawl down into a cave?" We've all asked this of our monohull bretheren. Now NEEL Trimarans asks the same of us. Just Makes Sense is 650 square feet of single-level living space with panoramic views. . . cruising at 10 knots often attaining mid-teens and very capable of 300 mile days. This NEEL 50 combines the best aspects of racing trimarans and cruising catamarans. Just Makes Sense has low drag hulls driven by a 75 hp engine or the high aspect rig. She has internal and external helm stations, an internal mast station for raising and reefing, three tasteful double staterooms, two heads, a central galley, a forward bridgedeck salon, even a piano. She's not just galley up - She's everything up! Ama-to-Ama living and entertaining with all of the mechanical systems, tankage, batteries, and even a pantry below in the main hull with excellent access to all.
This is a vessel with serious globetrotting potential. She is a loft under sail and brings a new aesthetic in naval architecture to the multihull world. Who knew the most spacious multihull would have 3 hulls and sparkling performance? NEEL Trimarans did.

General Design & Accommodations
The NEEL 50's ama-to-ama concept frees it from the layout plan of existing cruising trimarans and catamarans. Not just the galley is up. Everything is up! Dinghy up to the stern and step aboard a panoramic cruising platform. First there is the aft deck. At anchor this is a very sheltered outdoor space. At sea it is a very protected and ergonomic helm station with room for company and crew. Step forward into an urban loft. Inside is the central galley with island sink and in-hull cellar, cooktop, dual countertops as well as space for an office, study, entertainment center, or in this case a piano. Beneath the sole things that should be down and centered are down and centered. This includes the engine and tankage, all wiring runs and circuitry, space for watermakers, heaters & air conditioners, as well as the galley cellar. Back up and forward the intimacy of the galley is replaced by the spectacular views of the forward facing salon. The salon contains an l-shaped settee with integral dinette. Opposite is another full couch and an inside navigation station. Views forward and abeam are true panoramas. Forward still is the forepeak houses a private double cabin. To each side of the galley are the wingdeck cabins. These double cabins offer foot and side access to the bunks, cabinetry, and luxurious ensuite heads.
This spaciousness is provided without neglecting performance. The easily driven trimaran hulls cruise easily at 10 knots and the square topped rig provides plenty of power. Ama wing keels and an aerodynamic exterior allow for good windward performance. The same wing keels and the reinforced hull allow the NEEL 50 to navigate very shallow waters and take to the bottom when called for.
Performance The NEEL 50 is designed for fast cruising and regularly sails at more than 10 knots average. 300 mile days are attainable and 15 to 20 knots are often reached as when wind strengthens. The NEEL 50 is set up with innovations developed by racing multihulls. She has a square top mainsail, Vectran shrouds and forestay, reef hooks, and a carbon rudder. Weight distribution is centered, limiting pitching. The main sail roach facilitates tacking. Amas are full for plenty of reserve buoyancy and stability. This trimaran is also fast under power. The main hull prismatic coefficient is very low and amas touch only very lightly. Her 75 hp diesel drives her easily at 10 knots.

Safety A great deal of stability is derived from the NEEL 50's 36' 8" beam. Her hulls, decks, and bulkheads are of PVC foam sandwich construction. Structural calculations and optimization were performed by Tensyl Company whose prior work included the trimaran Trilogic. The NEEL 50 has forward collision bulkheads in the main hull as well as the amas. Three foils protect the propeller, rudder, and amas. These main hull foil and ama wing keels enable the NEEL 50 to dry out on a ramp or a beach. Exceptionally low draft for a 50' allows for exploration of the most protected of anchorages. Winches and stoppers for sheeting the sails are fitted inside protecting the crew in adverse conditions and very welcome on a night watch. The NEEL 50 is certified according to EC regulation by ICNN (Institut de Certification et de Normalisation dans le Nautisme). |
