“Amakama” is a “open wing” design with net areas between the main hull and the floats between the crossbeams. There are also bow nets. Nets will be new in 2008. The main hull is flared well above the waterline to provide additional interior volume and a drier ride. There are 2 x crossbeams and 6 x bulkheads, two of which are watertight. The forward watertight compartment, which also houses the anchor locker, has both horizontal and vertical bulkheads with inspection port. The bulkhead dividing the engine room from the aft cabin is also watertight. The forward wing cavities contain outside access lockers for deck equipment. There are two additional outside access lockers just forward and outboard of the cockpit. The cockpit has several storage areas in the coamings and under the seats. The port and starboard aft wing cavities each contain a storage locker accessible from bottom hatches for emergency equipment. There is an 18” x 18” Bomar access hatch in each float. The bottom of the main hull is fitted with a minikeel through which a swinging centerboard passes. The centerboard is controlled with uphaul and downhaul lines leading to the cockpit. The single rudder is mounted on a skeg and is operated by an Edson pull-pull cable type wheel steering system. She is very well balanced on all points of sail and will self-steer when close hauled and reaching with the wheel locked. Construction “Amakama” was constructed over male molds. Wood surfaces are epoxy coated and glued with epoxy glue. Hulls are of fiberglass foam sandwich construction. The core material is 5/8” Klegecell PVC foam except for the bow section of the main hull, which is 5/8” Airex PVC foam. The outer skin is 1 oz. chopped strand mat, 24 oz. woven roving and 1 oz. chopped strand mat. The inner skin is 1 oz. chopped strand mat and 24 oz. woven roving. Resin is 1027 waxless slow cure polyester. Total hull thickness is about 3/4”. The stem of the main hull is constructed of 14 layers of 1/4” Douglas Fir, laminated with epoxy. This provides a secure attachment for the forestay chainplate. Hulls are painted white with a blue stripe using Glass Shield polyurethane paint. The hull bottoms have a Devoe epoxy barrier coat. They are also coated with antifouling paint (to be renewed prior to launching in 2008). Main hull decks are of fiberglass foam sandwich construction. The core material is 1/2” Klegecell PVC foam. The outer skin is 1 oz. chopped strand mat, 9 oz. woven roving and 1 oz. chopped strand mat. The inner skin is 1 oz. chopped strand mat and 9 oz. woven roving. Resin is 1027 waxless slow cure polyester. Total thickness is about 5/8”. The deck over the galley and navigation station is constructed of 3/8” Bruynzeel mahogany marine plywood to facilitate deck hardware attachment. Deck beams are Douglas Fir. Deck stringers and hardware backing blocks are Ash. Companionway slides and trim, anchor well, rub rails and net attachment cleats are Teak. Decks are painted beige with Glass Shield non-skid polyurethane paint. Ama decks are constructed of 3/8” Bruynzeel mahogany marine plywood covered with 1 oz. chopped strand mat/epoxy. Crossbeams are Douglas Fir and 3/8” Bruynzeel mahogany marine plywood box beams bonded and coated with cold cure epoxy.
