This Freebird 50 catamaran is one of the finest production catamarans ever built. She was exhibited at the 1993 Southampton Boat Show, where she won the ‘Boat of the Show’ award. She was purchased at the show by her original owner, who then sailed her to the Canary Islands. From 1995 to 1998 the boat was in day charter service carrying deck passengers off the south coast of Tenerife.

In late 1999, her original owner installed radar, SSB, GPS, generator and new sails. The engines, which had about 8500 hours, were rebuilt. Carpets were fitted in the salon and hulls and the salon was re-upholstered.

The current owners purchased the boat in 2000. They prepared her for long-term cruising, including installation of a water maker. During the following 7 years, they crossed the Atlantic, cruised the Caribbean, transited the Panama Canal and cruised extensively in the Pacific. They report that their Freebird 50 has performed very well, at times reaching 18 knots under Gennaker alone and 6 to 7 knots under bare poles. She is capable of sailing at apparent wind angles of 35 to 40 degrees.

This Freebird 50 has benefited from excellent care and regular upgrades by both of her owners. She is a “going concern” and is ready to cruise now. Her owners have been live-aboard cruisers for over 10 years and now wish to spend some time ashore with their families. Here’s your opportunity!

Owner's Comments

We have been extremely impressed with the Freebird 50’s performance and finish compared to other catamarans, new and used. She has far greater living areas than similar sized catamarans. In 2007 she was on the hard at a yard in New Zealand with more than two dozen cruising catamarans from around the world. The owner/manager of the yard commented on her being the only catamaran there without structural damage and he was extremely impressed with her construction. We were amazed because he was comparing her with some catamarans that were only 1 year old. It is our understanding that the Freebirds built after her were not built with the same quality of finish and strength of construction. She is one of a kind and a comfortable and happy live-aboard boat.
